Below are some of the major events hosted by Brown Residential College every year. Numerous smaller events, hosted by individual residents or by Co-Chairships through Brown College’s Student Governance Board, occur every year in addition to those listed here.

Annual Events

Welcome Picnic

At the beginning of the year, students and faculty are invited to a picnic on Monroe Hill to welcome new residents to Brown College.

Brown College Barbeque

A barbeque to celebrate the beginning of a new year. Typically held on the Quad, the barbeque features grilled food and activities including cornhole, frisbee, and others.

Scavenger Hunt

The new resident scavenger hunt brings teams of new residents and group leaders together to find unusual landmarks around Brown College and the rest of UVA.

Big-Little Reveal

Each summer, new residents are given the opportunity to participate in the big-little program, where each “little” is paired with an anonymous resident that offers advice and a sense of community. Each big-little pair is revealed on Monroe Hill during this community event.

Morea Cup

Every fall, Brown College competes with Hereford Residential College, the International Residential College, and the language houses in a friendly event to promote intra-collegiate engagement and solidarity.

Tailgate

Brown College hosts a tailgate party and grabs front-row seats to cheer on the Virginia Cavaliers in the first home football game of the year.

Brown College Banquets

Brown College’s official banquets, held in the Newcomb Ballroom, are an opportunity for students and faculty to mingle and share a meal. Banquets usually feature a student-selected theme and occasionally attract special guests from the University.

Hauntings

Hauntings is Brown College’s annual haunted house charity fundraiser, attended by hundreds of other students, alumni, and community members. Often considered Brown College’s premier student-led event, dozens of residents set up, act, and participate in this annual tradition.

Brownsgiving

Brown College celebrates Thanksgiving in style at the Monroe Hill House, featuring dozens of dishes prepared by residents for the event.

Semi-Formals

The bi-annual Brown College semi-formal is hosted at a local venue with food, music, and dancing. Every year, the theme is selected by current residents and social co-chairs and lasts throughout the evening.

In the spring, students give Brown Talks on a topic of their passion or expertise in the Monroe Hill House. Topics range from humorous to serious, academic to personal and artistic, and are open for all residents.

Cultural Potluck

Multicultural potluck is an event focused on celebrating the multicultural student body of Brown College through food. Residents prepare meals of personal and cultural importance to share with each other in the Monroe Hill House.

Recognition Banquet

The end-of-year recognition banquet, held in the Newcomb Ballroom, presents awards to outstanding residents, faculty fellows, and co-chairs for their accomplishments and spirit during this final major event of the year.

Commencement Luncheons

For graduating residents, luncheons are held during graduation season to celebrate the end of their undergraduate career with friends and family.

Recurring Events

Saffron Café

Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, the Saffron Café Managers bake cakes, cookies, and other delights for residents to eat while studying or socializing with friends.

Brown Talks

In the spring, students give Brown Talks on a topic of their passion or expertise in the Monroe Hill House every Friday. Topics range from humorous to serious, academic to personal and artistic, and are open for all residents.

Movie Nights with Professor Demas

Professor Demas, one of Brown College’s many faculty fellows, screens weekly movie nights with residents. Previous films have included the Matrix, Looney Tunes, and everything in between.
